– Kathleen Albertson, L. Ac., PhD is no stranger to acupuncture critics, but a recent research university report which claims that acupuncture is a mind-over-matter treatment that is nothing but a sham has the acupuncturist and author defending her profession. A reporter with The Orange County Register recently interviewed Dr. Albertson to ask her what she thought about the university studies claims.
The reporter, Jane Glenn Haas, asked her if she felt the studies were accurate. when she stated, “You say that recent articles reporting acupuncture is nothing but a sham, a mind-over-matter treatment, are not accurate, even though they boast test studies done at various universities.” Dr. Albertson, known for her positive outlook followed up by stating, “Positive thinking does make a difference. Energy flows through. This could be “chi,” empathy, hope or helpfulness. In my opinion, it does influence a person’s feelings. The brain works in ways we cannot comprehend fully in scientific terms. I stand by acupuncture mediating pain receptors.”
The full-length interview of Dr. Kathleen Albertson was published on August 31, 2010 and also asked about her personal experiences as an acupuncturist, her Chinese Acupuncture education, and the recent publication of her book “Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women’s Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine.” Since women’s health is a focus of Dr. Albertson’s acupuncture practice in Irvine, California, Ms. Haas naturally questioned the use of acupuncture as a treatment for fertility to which Dr. Albertson replied “Many women have come to me who are in their late 30s. They are spending as much as $20,000 for each in-vitro treatment. They are desperate. They would stand on their head if a doctor told them to. These are professional women who used long-term birth control.”
“Integrating Western and Eastern care improves patient outcomes.” Dr. Albertson plans to publish a book about men’s health in the coming year. Her success as an acupuncturist has garnered her attention of many alternative medicine radio broadcasts, journalists and bloggers. She has studied both here in the US and in China. She holds her PhD in Holistic Nutrition.
